Wife of Martin Luther
Katharina von Bora was a former Catholic nun who became the wife of Martin Luther, a leader of the Protestant Reformation.
Born in Germany, she entered a convent at a young age. After learning about Luther’s teachings, she left the convent in 1523 and married Luther in 1525.
Katharina was a devoted Christian, wife, mother, and capable businesswoman. She helped support Luther’s ministry while managing a busy household.
How she lived her faith
Faith: Embraced the Reformation’s emphasis on salvation by grace through faith.
Family: Raised six children and cared for other children in her home.
Hospitality: Welcomed students, ministers, travelers, and those in need.
Stewardship: Managed household finances, gardens, livestock, and a brewery.
Service: Helped care for the sick and provided food and shelter to others.
Perseverance: Endured financial struggles, illness, and the deaths of loved ones.
Her lasting legacy
Katharina played an important role in supporting Martin Luther’s work. Their home became a gathering place for theological discussions, fellowship, and discipleship.
She demonstrated that marriage, motherhood, hospitality, and everyday responsibilities are valuable opportunities to serve God.
Lesson: Serving God does not always require a public position. Faithfulness in our homes, relationships, and daily responsibilities can have a lasting influence on others.
