Each one of us has a specific NAME that we were given by someone, usually our parents.
Each name has a meaning.
Do you know the meaning of your NAME? Have you ever thought about the meaning of your NAME?
My ‘given’ name at birth was Cynthia. I always hated that NAME!! So, I went by the nickname of Cindy.
A few years ago I was putting together a Women’s Bible study on THE NAMES OF GOD, and did word studies on His NAME/NAMES and my own!
As I looked into the name of Cynthia , it means ‘from Mount Kynthos’ or woman from Kynthos in Greek…and is widely associated with the moon and the Greek moon goddess!!
(My initial thoughts were…I’m a moon goddess? And ‘where in the world is Mount Kynthos?!!)
Then I looked up on “pinterest’ the meaning….
Cynthia
She is a fountain of joy for all. Friends know that Cynthia can keep a secret. Silence is the key to thought. Though not many in number, her friends are ‘golden’. A career in business management would suit Cynthia. The right career is the key to financial success for her.”
Soooooo…if you know me, at all….NONE of that is true!!! I loved my years as a teacher of pre-schoolers, and after that went into ministry with my hubby, John!!
BUT….Names are important to us because they often do more than just identify an individual; they can actually reveal who a person is, and what he or she is like.
This is the very same with God.
As you may know, God goes by many different names in the Bible. One commentator has counted over 63 different names of God found in Scripture.
That seems like a lot but God is so awesome that the number of names we could use to describe Him is as endless as He is.
These names provide us with at least two helpful truths.
1. They help us identify the one true God. The pagan nations worshipped false gods so one reason God gave us His name is so we can know how He is different.
2. His names describe His character. When we study what He goes by, we will actually get to know what He is like.
When I wrote the bible study on HIS Names and His Character, I discovered 3 foundational principles:
**His names are given by God Himself. The names of God are not ‘thought up by people”. God is not some abstract thought or nameless power. He is personal and knowledgeable. And, one of the ways His personality is known is through the giving of His names.
**Each name of God reveals one of His qualities or characteristics.
**These names were given (from God) to His people in order to help them through a moment of need. These names are like miniature portraits filled with promises, given by God as a gift to us so we can actually know HIM.
The reason I wrote the study on Gods Names was this…..I wanted people to KNOW God, to KNOW HIS NAMES, to KNOW WHO GOD IS.
I studied Jesus a lot, however, I really didn’t KNOW GOD the way I knew Jesus!!
So…..you may be asking ~ OK, Cindy…. Whats next???
I am so glad you asked!!!
These daily posts are a part of the Ministry of Celebrate the Seasons.
This ministry was ‘birthed’ out of a desire for local women to have a place to fellowship, learn more about being a Godly woman, eat some great food and do a little bit of boutique shopping!!
We have quarterly ‘REFRESHES’ … and the next REFRESH will be October, 24th from 10:00 to 1:00.
THIS VERY TOPIC OF THE MOST IMPORTANT NAME OF GOD….I AM will be taught on October 24th!!
Additionally, CELEBRATE THE SEASONS will offer a few weeks of more ‘in depth’ teaching on God’s Names in January!!!
We hope you will join us as we dig deeper into HIS PERSONAL NAME….
I AM.
-Cindy
