Read John 6
John places this well-known miracle on the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee during Passover season. A hungry crowd, a questioning Philip, an observant Andrew, and one boy’s small lunch become the setting for an astounding multiplication that leaves twelve baskets of leftovers. Allister walks us through the scene, then asks two probing questions: What does the sign mean, and why does it matter? The answer: every sign in John reveals Jesus’ identity. This one displays His creative authority and generosity, declaring that He is the Bread of Life and confronting both unbelief and superficial fascination. It challenges skeptics, comforts believers, and summons the Church to feed on Christ and offer Him to a starving world.
Christianity rests on the supernatural; to deny miracles is to deny the core—incarnation and resurrection. Like the blind man’s healing reveals Jesus as Light, this meal reveals Him as Bread: the true manna from heaven. The crowd, however, focuses on free food and political victory, missing the divine disclosure.
Every sermon becomes a crossroads: some follow for loaves; others receive the Life-giver Himself.
Examine your motives this week: are you following Jesus for benefits or for Himself?
