In God We Trust
I need to share this memory before it becomes obsolete, and no one knows what I’m talking about.
I remember, as a little girl, taking walks with my Grandma Grace in the city. Walking with my grandma was always an adventure; she knew interesting people, she talked to squirrels, and we’d identify stores by their smells. She would always pick up pennies she’d find on the ground. “Ooh, this is a blessing”, she would say. Sometimes we’d buy penny candy with them or sometimes put them in the jar at home.
For someone that lived through the depression, finding pennies on the ground was truly a blessing. Someone later showed me that on every penny was written, ‘IN GOD WE TRUST’.
Psalm 91:2 “I will say of the lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust”.
What a reminder it became to trust Him in everything. Pennies would be on the sidewalk before an interview, meetings, or a doctor’s appointment; always leading to prayer or quoting scripture whenever I picked them up. It was a reminder to look up instead of down- you are not walking alone throughout your day.
“It is better to trust in the Lord then to put confidence in man” Ps 118:8.
Pennies became tiny spots of encouragement both for me and others. I would share one with friends when they need reminding to trust God in their situation.
“When I am afraid. I put my trust in you’ Ps 56:3.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5,6.
While pennies are no longer minted, you might still be blessed to find one when you need it. If they truly become obsolete, ‘In God We Trust’ is still printed on all U.S. money. It all belongs to him and really should be our focus whenever we grip it too tightly or spend it too frivolously.
I just realized that it’s not only pennies that may become obsolete- money in general is slowly being replaced. I am gobsmacked by this! So then, this too may pass. But God is faithful and if we need reminders He will provide.
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Lam 3:22-23
On this praise we will end, thank you for sharing my memories.
