The last few weeks we’ve looked at the Savior’s love by His choosing of His saints for salvation.

On the other side of salvation comes the practical, everyday walk with Christ.

This week we’ll look at trials, which help (never said it was easy) to strengthen and build our faith. Hoping you’ll find song, which is deep with word pictures, an encouragement and blessing to your week.

“BLESSINGS”

We pray for blessings
We pray for peace
Comfort for family, protection while we sleep

We pray for healing, for prosperity
We pray for Your mighty hand to ease our suffering

And all the while, You hear each spoken need
Yet love us way too much to give us lesser things

‘Cause what if your blessings come through raindrops?
What if Your healing comes through tears?
What if a thousand sleepless nights
Are what it takes to know You’re near?
And what if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise?

We pray for wisdom
Your voice to hear
And we cry in anger when we cannot feel You near

We doubt Your goodness, we doubt Your love
As if every promise from Your Word is not enough

And all the while, You hear each desperate plea
And long that we’d have faith to believe

‘Cause what if your blessings come through raindrops?
What if Your healing comes through tears?
And what if a thousand sleepless nights
Are what it takes to know You’re near?
And what if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise?

When friends betray us
And when darkness seems to win
We know that pain reminds this heart
That this is not, this is not our home
It’s not our home

‘Cause what if your blessings come through raindrops?
What if Your healing comes through tears?
And what if a thousand sleepless nights
Are what it takes to know You’re near?

What if my greatest disappointments
Or the aching of this life
Is the revealing of a greater thirst this world can’t satisfy

And what if trials of this life
The rain, the storms, the hardest nights
Are Your mercies in disguise?

The Story Behind
“BLESSINGS”

Laura Story wrote her Grammy-winning song “Blessings” after her husband, Martin, was diagnosed with a brain tumor just one year into their marriage.

The Medical Crisis:
In 2006, shortly after they were married, Martin faced a sudden and life-threatening health crisis.
He underwent multiple brain surgeries and suffered severe complications that required a breathing machine.
Martin survived, but the surgeries left him with lasting challenges, including long-term memory loss, vision problems, and ongoing physical rehabilitation.

Wrestling with God’s Plan:
Laura spent years walking through deep grief, fear, and the exhausting daily reality of being a caregiver.
She struggled to understand why a loving God would allow such intense pain and alter the future they had planned.
Instead of finding immediate answers, she realized that her hardest moments—the sleepless nights and tears—were actually deepening her intimacy and reliance on God.

The Creation of the Song:
The lyrics were pulled straight from her personal journal entries and diary reflections over a five-year period of trials.
The music video and background details of her journey are shared on platforms like Laura Story Official Site, where she explains how the song became an expression of surrender.
Released in 2011, the song asks a profound question that resonated with millions: What if trials and tears are actually mercies in disguise? It went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Song in 2012.
