Recovery Wednesday
Each week we have been touching base of the 12 steps for recovery. These posts have been just an example of the self exploration needed to find yourself and develop a relationship with our Lord. Each person’s recovery is unique to themselves and should not be rushed. These past weeks have been just an example of the journey of the steps. It could take you several months, or maybe even longer to dive deep into your recovery process. Take your time!!
Today we introduce you to Step 7:
We humbly asked Him to remove all our shortcomings.
Romans 12:1-2
“Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice holy and pleasing to God-this is true worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is-His good and perfect will.”
What this means to us is that if we refrain from our addictions, obsessions, and bad choices, our mind clears and it is not clouded by the lies of deception. Our mind becomes clear, our thinking and the way we feel about things changes. We are able to let God’s Word lead and strengthen us with a fresh, renewed way of looking at things.
Defects of character cause stress in our daily lives. They can damage trust with family and friends, and they keep us stuck in unhealthy emotions. (The Life Recovery Journey)
How can we discover our shortcomings and character defects to ask God to remove them?
Self Reflection: noticing negative, automatic responses. Are we reacting or responding?
Accountability: admitting our mistakes honestly.
Humility: step 7 is not just about asking. It is also being humble enough to willingly do whatever is required. We work on our character so it doesn’t stand in the way of how God wants to use us.
We want a better life and we want to grow toward Him rather than remain in the foolishness of our self obsessions. We want new tools and new insights, and we are willing to do whatever it takes so we may become who God wants us to be. It is natural to want quick change in our lives, that ‘ah ha’ moment, but we need to accept and realize that change takes time.
Recovery is not perfection, it is a process.
James 4:10
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up in heaven.
How will you Humble yourself today to allow for change?
Til next week!
Robin
