STORY BEHIND “PURIFY MY HEART”
“Purify My Heart” (widely known by its opening lines, “Purify my heart, touch me with Your cleansing fire”) is an iconic Christian worship anthem. It originated as a deeply personal, meditative prayer written in 1990 by Canadian Christian songwriter Brian Doerksen.
Doerksen wrote the song as a personal spiritual plea, inspired by the scriptural imagery of a Master refiner using intense heat to strip away impurities so that gold and silver emerge flawless.
Later, it was adapted by Maranatha! Music, the song’s themes of holiness and surrender perfectly aligned with the core mission of Promise Keepers—a massive men’s ministry movement founded by University of Colorado football coach Bill McCartney.
The song resonated deeply with the millions of men who attended the historic Promise Keepers stadium events in the 1990s. “Purify My Heart” served as a powerful, unifying prayer of repentance and sanctification, encouraging men to be vulnerable, confess personal struggles, and seek personal holiness. Recorded by the Maranatha! Promise Band on albums like Seize The Moment (1994) and Raise The Standard (1995), it remains one of the most enduring anthems of that era.
