TRUST and OBEY
—When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will, He abides with us still
And with all who will trust and obey

CHORUS:Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey

—Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies
But His smile quickly drives it away
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh or a tear
Can abide while we trust and obey

CHORUS: Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey

—Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way
What He says we will do, where He sends we will go
Never fear, only trust and obey

CHORUS: Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey

STORY BEHIND “TRUST and OBEY”

“Trust and Obey” was written in 1887 by Presbyterian minister John H. Sammis, inspired by a simple testimony from a young man at a Dwight L. Moody crusade in Boston who said, “I’m not quite sure—but I’m going to trust, and I’m going to obey.” Daniel B. Towner composed the music.

Key Details of the Hymn Story:
The Inspiration: During a testimony meeting at a revival, a young man (whose name is not recorded) stood and uttered the phrase, “I am not quite sure—but I am going to trust, and I am going to obey”.
The Composer’s Action: Daniel B. Towner, who was leading the music for the revival, wrote down the sentence and sent it to his friend, Rev. John H. Sammis, to write the lyrics.
Publication: The hymn was published in 1887 in the book Hymns Old and New.
Theme and Meaning: The hymn emphasizes that obedience to God is the natural result of trusting Him. It highlights that true joy and assurance come from walking in the light of God’s Word, as noted in 1 Samuel 15:22 and John 15.
