Read Numbers 35,36
Pastor David walks us through versus 7 – 8. The command of the Lord to scatter the tribes of Levi had a curious beginning. Genesis 34 tells the story. In Genesis 49:5-7 Jacob is dying and he curses them to scatter.
God does divide the tribes of Simeon and Levi. Significantly, the way God does this is different.
The tribe of Simeon was faithless, and basically dissolved and absorbed into Judah. The tribe of Levi was also scattered because of their faithfulness during the golden calf rebellion, they are scattered as a blessing to all of Israel. This fulfilled Jacob’s curse that turns out to be a blessing to the tribe of Levi.
God spread them out, so their ministry influence would be distributed to all the people. God intended these ministers to go out among the people.
God wants Christians to be sprinkled throughout the world, influencing people for Christ. Get out of your church huddle. When we isolate ourselves, we work against the nature of Jesus. Influence others. Don’t be so isolated.

Pastor David also walks us through versus 11 and 12. In ancient Israel, it was not left up to the government entirely to bring a murderer to justice. Genesis 9:6. This was meant to be an effective deterrent. But what if the death was accidental and difficult to prove it was accidental.
Cities of rescue were appointed Levitical, Priestly cities. God commanded there be six cities of refuge. Anyone could find refuge.
The Bible applies this picture to the believer finding refuge in God. Psalm 46:1, Hebrew 6:18.
We can’t run to Jesus for refuge. No one will be turned away from this refuge in their time of need. The cities, like Jesus, were the only alternative for the person in need. The protection is only within their boundaries.
Full freedom only came with the death of the high priest and the sacrificial death of Jesus, our high priest. The difference between the two is that the cities only helped the innocent, but for us, it’s the guilty who can find refuge in Jesus.
