Recovery Wednesday
“Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” Matthew 11:28-29
Getting sober is one challenge, staying sober is another. Both come with unique difficulties but through those difficulties, you can experience great rewards. When it comes to staying sober, dealing with life’s inevitable twists and turns is a crucial part of the process, whether you’re fresh in recovery or years down the road.
-Staying Sober
Grief is one of those tragic life events that can tempt recovering addicts. Triggering intense emotional pain, anxiety and feelings of emptiness that used to be numbed by our drug/alcohol/action of choice. This can create a high risk for relapse, or for the active addict, a deeper dependence. This often leads to a desire for immediate escape or relief from the heartache and pain. The moment of payoff isn’t worth the cost.
It is so important to maintain your support system before you go down that rabbit hole. Don’t allow yourself to be alone, reach out to those you trust. Lean on God through prayer and scripture. Allow yourself to experience the pain without numbing it. Trust that God will get you through this. What feels hopeless and overwhelming today will lead to better days and ways to live with your loss.
Isaiah 40:31
But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
Keep the faith, Sisters and lean on each other. Iron sharpens Iron.
