My thoughts about the song, “Mary, Did You Know“
IMHO this is one of the finest and most beautiful of Christmas songs ever composed.
In this song, you’ll not find Santa baby, his reindeer pulling a sleigh, the north pole, or him knowing if you’ve been bad, or good. There are no busy, city sidewalks with silver bells. You won’t find chestnuts roasting, sleigh bells ringing, while dashing through the snow, or being happy tonight while walking in a winter wonderland. There’s nothing about being home for Christmas, while dreaming of a White Christmas. Don’t get me wrong, I’m definitely not a “bah humbug“ kind of person, and I enjoy singing Christmas songs as much as the next person, but we know these fun songs are NOT the true meaning of Christmas.
Instead, what you’ll find in “Mary, Did You Know?“ is the deity of Jesus Christ as the perfect God-Man who came to earth to save sinners like you and me. That’s the true meaning of Christmas!
This is such a poignant song. It speaks of Jesus’ birth, as well as Him coming to deliver His mother from her sin, and the sins of all who will believe.
Some of His many miracles are in this song, like healing the blind, deaf and mute as well as raising the dead back to life.
It tells of Him being Lord of all creation, which was shown by His calming the storm on the sea of Galilee, along with other miracles of that nature, that aren’t mentioned.
It also talks about Him being where angels have trod; His pre-incarnate time in heaven with the Father.
Or, how about that powerful word picture of Mary, when kissing the face of her baby, and asking, “Did you know, Mary, when you kiss your little baby, you’re actually kissing the face of God?” That’s really hard to wrap my puny little brain around!
And the best of all is yet to come, when He’ll return to rule the nations and set things right! The reason He can and will do all this is because He’s truly, the One and only “Great I Am!!!” The One we are accountable to and rightfully bow the knee to.

Self-Existence: God is the uncreated, eternal being. �
Sovereignty: He is all-powerful and sufficient for all needs. �
Identity: Jesus, by using this name, claims to be the eternal God, YAHWEH, in human form.

Story Behind:
“Mary, Did You Know?” was written by Mark Lowry in 1984 as a series of rhetorical questions he’d ask Mary about her baby, Jesus, for a church Christmas program, imagining her perspective as the mother of God, with Buddy Greene adding the melody in 1991, leading to its recording by Michael English and becoming a modern classic, though it sparked debate over how much Mary actually knew.
Origin & Inspiration:
The Idea (1984): Mark Lowry, known for comedy with the Gaither Vocal Band, was asked to write a Christmas program for his church. He wondered what it would be like to raise Jesus and started writing questions he’d ask Mary if he met her, like, “When you kiss your little baby, you’ve kissed the face of God”. ��The Music (1991):
