The Story Behind “‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus”
The hymn “‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus” was written by Louisa M.R. Stead after a personal tragedy in which her husband drowned while trying to save a drowning boy. Witnessing this devastating loss, Stead found solace by turning to her faith, and the words to the hymn came to her as a divine inspiration to express her profound reliance on Jesus. The hymn was published in 1882 with music by William J. Kirkpatrick.
The Tragedy: In the early 1880s, Stead and her husband, George, were on a picnic with their young daughter, Lily. They heard a boy crying for help in the water and her husband immediately went to his rescue. Tragically, both the boy and her husband drowned, leaving Stead a widow.
The Inspiration: In the face of immense grief and despair, Stead turned to her faith in Jesus Christ. She found peace and solace by pouring out her heart in prayer and trusting in God’s promises. The words of the hymn came to her as a result of this experience.
The Legacy: Published in 1882, the hymn has continued to provide comfort and hope to countless people dealing with their own tragedies and challenges. Louisa Stead herself went on to become a missionary in South Africa.
