Recovery Wednesday:
Taking that first step of a 12-step program, we have to admit what we’ve been denying. We must realize that the secret we’ve been hiding has robbed us of our own feelings and our energy. It has prevented us from growing spiritually and emotionally and alienates us from relationships with loved ones and from God. We falsely believe that our addictions and bad habits are soothing our pain, when in reality, they’re causing and/or lengthening the pain.
Matthew 5:3- Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Step 1: We admit that we are powerless over our addictions and compulsive behaviors, that our lives have become unmanageable.
Romans 7:18-For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.
What areas in your life are unmanageable?
How can taking this first step help you?
Do you turn to your addictions or bad behaviors to handle pain or disappointment?
These questions can be tough and you may not know how to answer them if you’re numb to your own feelings and/or you’ve been burying your pain and disappointments for a long time.
Don’t rush your responses. Sit with God, talk with a trusted friend, turn to scripture. Admit you’re powerless and let God have the power to walk you through this journey.
Matthew 19:26- With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.
As we walk through these steps together, I encourage you to pick up a Christian led 12-step study. It will walk you through the tough questions that I’ve introduced to you. The program will give you an opportunity to journal and grow as you heal traumas that you may not have realized you even had.
If you have questions or want to share your first step, I invite you to message me.
Til next week
Robin
