ELOHIM Lesson ONE
Names are important to us because they often do more than just identify an individual; they can actually reveal who a person is, and what he or she is like.
“A name is crucial for identity, social interaction and personal connection. Our name is how a person is identified! A name is more than just a label, it is a symbol that carries cultural, historical and personal significance. “

This is the very same with God.
God goes by many different names in the Bible.
One commentator has counted over 63 different names of God found in Scripture. That seems like a lot but God is so awesome that the number of names we could use to describe Him are as endless as He is.
The names of God provide us with two helpful TRUTHS ~
1. They help us identify the ONE TRUE GOD.
2. HIS names describe HIS character.
When we study the name He goes by, we will actually get to know what He is like (His character)
The names of God are windows through which His character is seen.
ELOHIM ~ Powerful God ~ CREATOR, MIGHTY, STRONG.
Look up Genesis 1:1.
The Hebrew name here for GOD is ELOHIM ~
“In the beginning GOD (Elohim) ‘created’ the heavens and the earth
Read Genesis 1:26 WHO is present in this verse?
These two verses (Genesis 1:1 and 1:26) are using the name ELOHIM, the plural form of God. If we are to understand the plural in this manner…it affirms that God, eternal in nature has always been three in one ~ the One true God manifesting Himself in His plurality as God The Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
Interestingly, the word Elohim is grammatically ‘plural’ rather than singular (the -im suffix in Hebrew indicates the plural form). The singular form of Elohim is probably Eloah. What are we to make of the plural?
Does this mean there are more than ONE God? NO!!!
This reference to God in Genesis is the first reference to the Trinity, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. The blessed Trinity created the Heavens and earth.
One in essence, in character yet three persons united as ONE.
Look up the following verses about ELOHIM, Our Creator. WHAT does God claim in these verses???
Psalm 95:6
Psalm 121:2
Ecclesiastes 12:1
Isaiah 45: 8-9
Acts 17:24
Revelation 4:11
This little ‘study’ is to encourage you to learn more about God the Father.
There are so many, many more verses in the Bible that declare WHO God is!
Why is this so important to us
Because His Word tells us it is…..
Psalm 9:10
And those who KNOW YOUR NAME put their trust in YOU, for YOU O’LORD have not forsaken those who seek YOU’
Psalm 20:7
“Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we must trust in the NAME of the LORD our GOD”.
When we know someones name, we KNOW them….
Studying Gods Names is a powerful way to deepen our understanding of His character and grow closer to Him.
The more we study Gods names and their meanings, the more we trust Him.
