Good Morning!
A few weeks ago we learned some information about JEHOVAH ~
(Here is a little ‘repeat’ of that lesson….)
Some scholars have said the name Jehovah appears over 6,000 times in the Old Testament!!
In many ways, it is God’s most “famous” name.
Interestingly, Jehovah is the ENGLISH translation of the Hebrew name for God, which is YHWH or Yahweh. So, Jehovah and Yahweh are actually the same name.
Jehovah is the most sacred, holy Name of God for the Jews who had a great fear that they might pollute His holy Name and thus they refused to pronounce it!!
There was one exception on the great Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) when the high priest (and no one else) could speak “YHWH” as he entered the Holy of Holies.
The name of Israel’s God was so sacred that the Jews would not speak it; therefore the original pronunciation was eventually forgotten. So we are not 100% certain how to pronounce YHWH, but YAHWEH is the best attempt.
Depending on how a ‘name’ is defined (personal name, compound name or descriptive title there are over 900 names and titles found in scripture!!
Here are a few to look at….
JEHOVAH JIREH ~ The Lord will provide. We learn about this specific name from Genesis 22:1-19. Look up this passage and then look up the Hebrew word for JIREH…
JEHOVAH NISSI ~ The Lord is ‘my banner” or “my standard”. This passage of Gods name is found in one place….Exodus 17:15. By knowing that the Lord is ‘my banner’, you will understand that this symbolizes His presence, His power, and His provision incur lives.
I encourage you to read the whole chapter of Exodus 17!!
JEHOVAH RAPHA OR ROPHE ~ The God who heals. The most common spelling is RAPHA, translating to ‘completely make whole, to thoroughly mend and repair”. JEHOVAH RAPHA the GREAT PHYSICIAN, heals physical, spiritual and emotional illnesses. The passage in Exodus 15:26 is the first instance of JEHOVAH RAPHA.
Other bible references include ~
Jeremiah 17:14
Jeremiah 30:17
Psalm 30:2
Psalm 34:18
For the next few weeks we will continue to look at some of the JEHOVAH names of the Lord.
